About Matterhaul

Matterhaul is building the AI-native operating system for the built world. We help distributors, manufacturers, and their partners connect their systems, unify their data, and automate everyday workflows. From product information and quoting to order management and customer engagement, Matterhaul brings intelligence to every part of how business gets done.

Our mission is to make the built world work smarter. We replace disconnected systems and manual processes with a connected, intelligent platform that helps teams move faster, collaborate better, and grow with less overhead.

We’re a small but ambitious team with deep experience across AI, product, and construction, backed by leading investors and two years of runway. Our office is in San Francisco’s SOMA/Transbay area, and we believe in being close to our customers and to each other, in-office four days per week.

We spend time in the field with distributors, manufacturers, and job sites to understand how things really get built. We move fast, ship often, and bring powerful new capabilities to our users as soon as they’re ready.

The Role

We’re looking to build out our founding engineering team — a Founding Engineer who can build end-to-end, own large parts of the system, and shape the product from day one. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role where you’ll be working across the stack, with a special emphasis on AI/ML and data engineering.

You’ll work directly with the founders to:

  • Own features from problem discovery to shipped product.
  • Build scalable data ingestion, transformation, and AI-powered features.
  • Meet customers, understand their workflows, and prioritize what to build next.
  • Shape the technical roadmap and company engineering culture.
  • Mentor future hires and help recruit the early team.

What You’ll Work On

  • Full-stack development: Building features in React + ArkUI + Tailwind + Next.js, deploying via Vercel, and migrating Supabase to AWS Aurora Postgres.
  • Data & AI pipelines: Python-based ingestion (Kedro, Dagster, Iceberg) and AI tools (LangChain, DSPy), with a focus on evals, prompt engineering, and production AI systems.
  • Customer-driven development: Visiting our customers offices and job sites to gather feedback and see your work in action.
  • Product ownership: Identifying, ranking, and solving high-value customer problems.

What We’re Looking For

Must-haves:

  • 5+ years of experience
  • Strong experience with React and modern frontend development.
  • AWS expertise (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS/Aurora, etc.).
  • Python proficiency, especially in data workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with AI frameworks (LangChain, DSPy) and LLM application development.
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering and model evaluation techniques.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, ambiguous startup environments.
  • Experience directly interfacing with non-technical customers.
  • US citizenship (we do not sponsor visas).

Bonus points for:

  • Contributions to open-source AI frameworks.
  • Active involvement in AI meetups or hackathons.
  • Hands-on construction experience (e.g., remodeled your own home).

Compensation & Logistics

  • Base salary: $175k–$225k + Equity
  • Location: San Francisco, in-office 4 days/week
  • Schedule: Startup pace — some weeks will require extra hours to meet customer deadlines

Benefits

  • Health insurance with 100% premium covered
  • Generous PTO / sick leave
  • 401(k) plan
  • Lunch provided and snacks
  • Bring your dog to work 🐶
