Product Designer
We're looking for a Product Designer to help shape the user experience of our AI-powered platform. You'll work on interfaces that help distributors and manufacturers work more efficiently, from quoting tools to knowledge bases to customer facing tooling.
About Matterhaul
Matterhaul is building the AI-native operating system for the built world. We help distributors, manufacturers, and their partners connect their systems, unify their data, and automate everyday workflows. From product information and quoting to order management and customer engagement, Matterhaul brings intelligence to every part of how business gets done.
Our mission is to make the built world work smarter. We replace disconnected systems and manual processes with a connected, intelligent platform that helps teams move faster, collaborate better, and grow with less overhead.
We’re a small but ambitious team with deep experience across AI, product, and construction, backed by leading investors and two years of runway. Our office is in San Francisco’s SOMA/Transbay area, and we believe in being close to our customers and to each other, in-office four days per week.
We spend time in the field with distributors, manufacturers, and job sites to understand how things really get built. We move fast, ship often, and bring powerful new capabilities to our users as soon as they’re ready.
Why this role now
At Matterhaul, you won’t just be “the first designer” — you’ll be a true partner in building the company. You’ll have a direct hand in shaping the design, the brand, the product vision, and the team culture. You’ll sit across the table from customers, watch them use your work, and hear firsthand how it impacts their business.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Impact from day one — you’ll own major product areas outright.
- A front-row seat to startup building — from fundraising to customer acquisition to product strategy.
- A playground for AI innovation — we move fast to adopt and deploy cutting-edge AI capabilities.
- Work that matters — you’ll help a traditional, under-served industry leapfrog into a more productive, data-driven future.
If you want to build, ship, learn, and repeat — and you want your work to directly move the needle for a company and its customers — Matterhaul is the place for you.
We’re building the product from the ground up. Our design partners are eager to move fast, and we need a founding designer who can immerse in their world—mapping messy, real-world workflows—and turn that insight into a cohesive product and design system.
What you’ll do
- Own end-to-end product design—from discovery and IA to polished UI and shipped features.
- Build and maintain our design system (components, tokens, documentation).
- Plan and run user research with design partners; synthesize insights into actionable direction.
- Prototype rapidly to validate ideas (low to high fidelity in Figma).
- Support light brand/visual needs: marketing site sections, sales one-pagers, investor materials.
- Collaborate daily with the CEO (product) and CTO (engineering) to ship quickly.
You might be a great fit if you
- Have been a senior product designer and are excited to be the founding designer.
- Thrive in zero-to-one environments and have shipped complex B2B SaaS products.
- Are comfortable designing for AI/LLM-powered experiences (bonus) and software tied to physical-world workflows.
- Balance scrappy iteration with strong systems thinking.
- Are pragmatic—not a heavyweight process purist—and can flex process to fit the moment.
- Communicate clearly, give/receive feedback well, and love working closely with engineers and founders.
Must-haves
- 5+ years in product/UI/UX design (or equivalent impact), including zero-to-one work.
- B2B SaaS experience; comfort with complex data and enterprise workflows.
- Comfort and experience working in industries that have been traditionally less tech-forward
- Demonstrated ability to run research and translate insights into elegant solutions.
- Expert in Figma (components, prototyping, auto-layout, etc.).
Nice-to-haves
- Visual identity/brand chops.
- Familiarity with AI/LLM UX patterns.
- Understanding of accessibility best practices.
- Experience collaborating on marketing sites, decks, or sales collateral.
How we work (culture)
Collaborative. Scrappy. Fast-paced. We bias toward action, ship small and often, and iterate with real users. We value practicality over process for process’s sake.
Not a fit if you want to overhaul everything “the right way” before we can learn, or if you only want to push pixels without engaging users.
Compensation & Logistics
- Base salary: $150k–$200k + Equity
- Location: San Francisco, in-office 4 days/week (minimum)
- Schedule: Startup pace — some weeks will require extra hours to meet customer deadlines
Benefits
- Health insurance with 100% premium covered
- Unlimited PTO
- 401(k) plan
- Lunch provided and snacks
- Bring your dog to work 🐶
