Founding Marketer
We're looking for a Founding Marketer to help us build the Matterhaul brand from the ground up. You'll own brand, content, and events — and be a true partner to the CEO in telling the Matterhaul story to customers, partners, and the market.
About Matterhaul
Matterhaul is building the AI-native operating system for the physical goods supply chain.
Distributors and manufacturers run on disconnected systems, manual re-entry, and tribal knowledge that never gets captured. The software that was supposed to fix that never did. We're changing that.
Matterhaul sits above the systems these businesses already run — unifying their data, capturing the operational context legacy software misses, and deploying AI agents across quoting, order entry, procurement, dispatch, and customer updates. No rip and replace. Teams go live fast, and Matterhaul expands until it becomes the system the business runs on.
That's the wedge. The vision is bigger: a purpose-built, AI-native platform that doesn't just automate what ERPs do today — it does what they were never capable of.
We're a small team with deep roots in this space. Our founders grew up in the trades and spent careers building products for the physical world at Stripe, Verkada, and Cisco Meraki. We're based in San Francisco's SOMA/Transbay neighborhood, in-office four days a week, and we spend real time with the distributors and operators we build for.
We move fast, ship often, and build for the people who actually do the work.
Why this role now
The Matterhaul brand is being built right now — and you'll be the one building it. This isn't a role where you inherit a playbook, a team, or a budget that someone else set. You're starting from a strong foundation (sharp positioning, early customers, a founder with real operator credibility) and you're making it sing.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
- You'll own the brand voice — how Matterhaul sounds, shows up, and gets remembered across every channel.
- You'll own our presence in the field — conferences, customer dinners, industry events. You'll help us show up well and make those moments count.
- You'll be a thought partner to the CEO — on messaging, content strategy, founder brand, and how we tell the Matterhaul story to customers, investors, and the market.
- You'll see direct results — this is a company where marketing output becomes conversations, which become customers.
If you want to build something from scratch, work closely with a founder who's deeply embedded in the customer world, and have your fingerprints on everything — this is the role.
What you'll do
- Own Matterhaul's brand and content strategy — tone of voice, messaging, written and visual output across all channels.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute our presence at industry conferences and events (booth logistics, swag, signage, pre/post-event outreach).
- Help produce original content: thought leadership, customer stories, social posts, email campaigns, and more.
- Support the CEO's personal brand — content strategy, LinkedIn presence, podcast prep, and narrative development.
- Build and maintain brand assets and templates for sales, recruiting, and investor use.
- Partner daily with the CEO on GTM storytelling and market positioning.
You might be a great fit if you
- Have been a senior marketer at an early-stage B2B company and are ready to own the function outright.
- Are a strong writer — you can produce sharp, clear, human copy on deadline without a team behind you.
- Know how to show up at an industry conference and make it count: logistics, presence, follow-through.
- Are equally comfortable being strategic (what should we do and why?) and executional (getting it done).
- Thrive when you're working closely with a founder — not behind a layer of managers.
- Are scrappy, resourceful, and calm when the plan changes.
Must-haves
- 5+ years in marketing, brand, or content — including time at an early-stage company.
- Demonstrated ability to build or significantly shape a brand voice from the ground up.
- Strong writing skills across formats: long-form, short-form, email, social, and collateral.
- Experience planning and executing event presence (conferences, dinners, trade shows).
- B2B SaaS or tech startup background.
- Comfortable operating without a large team or established playbook.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with founder personal brand development.
- Familiarity with construction, industrial, manufacturing, or trades markets.
- Light design skills — enough to produce clean assets in Canva, Figma, or similar.
- Experience supporting sales or demand gen with marketing content.
How we work (culture)
Collaborative. Scrappy. Fast-paced. We bias toward action, ship small and often, and iterate with real feedback from real customers. Marketing here isn't separate from the business — it's in the room where the customer conversations happen.
Not a fit if you need a team around you to execute, prefer large-company process and pace, or want to focus exclusively on strategy without getting your hands dirty.
Compensation & Logistics
- Base salary: $180K-$210K + Equity
- Location: San Francisco, in-office 4 days/week (minimum)
- Schedule: Startup pace — some weeks will require extra hours to meet customer or event deadlines
Benefits
- Health insurance with 100% premium covered
- Unlimited PTO
- 401(k) plan
- Lunch provided and snacks
- Bring your dog to work 🐶
